VERB INTERPRETIVE POTENTIAL IN LINGUISTIC CONSTRUAL OF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE WORLD

Abstract:  The article explores the verb interpretive potential in linguistic construal of knowledge about the world from the three main perspectives: 1) Cognitive approach to the study of language (aiming at cognitive and language structures correlation analysis), 2) Anthropocentric nature of language, i.e. from the point of a speaker’s leading role in choosing the object and language means of interpretation and ways of meaning construction, and 3) within the framework of the Theory of linguistic interpretation.
While interacting with the world around, a person not only gains knowledge about it, but also constantly interprets this knowledge in his / her language activities. In fact, a language speaker (socially specific or generalized) construes the world in the mind in forms of knowledge units (concepts and categories) rather than mirrors it directly. This assumption opens wide possibilities for various linguistic interpretation of the world (primary – the interpretation of the variety of objects and events, secondary – the interpretation of previously obtained and verbalized knowledge about them).
Using examples from Russian and English, the author of the article argues that the verb interpretive potential largely depends on the structure and content of the verb cognitive basis - the structure and content of knowledge about events that a language speaker can represent from various points of view, in varying volume and at two different levels: basic and subordinate. The author also concludes that the interpretive potential of the verb is most evident at the subordinate level of linguistic representation of knowledge about events.
