COGNITIVE FOUNDATIONS OF THE MANIPULATIVE COMMUNICATIVE STYLE MODEL

Abstract:  This article is devoted to the manipulative communicative style modeling. The object is a manipulative speech influence; the subject matter is a manipulative communicative style. The hypothesis is based on the assumption that the manipulative communicative style depends on the cognitive parameter IMPULSIVITY/ REFLECTIVITY.
In accordance with the cognitive parameter IMPULSIVITY/ REFLECTIVITY were identified two manipulative communicative styles: explicit-dominant and latent. Explicit-dominant style represents highly emotional, evaluative and aggressive influence, whereas the latent style is associated with emotional restraint and rational distortion of facts. The discursive manifestation of the manipulative styles is described with the involvement of E. Shostrom’s typology of Manipulators.
The experiment aimed at verifying the hypothesis consisted of two stages. At the first stage, it determined the cognitive style of the subjects. At the second stage, the relationship between cognitive style and manipulative communicative style was established. We defined the style on the basis of the answers in the open and closed type tasks.
As a result of the experiment interpretation, the hypothesis was confirmed. It has proven the possibility of developing a holistic approach to the linguistic study of manipulation as a fundamentally continuous entity based on the manipulative communicative style, which is the category of integrative type.
