A CROSS-CULTURAL ANALYSIS OF STANCE IN NEWS ITEMS ON ECOLOGI-CAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

Abstract:  The study examines stance in American and Russian news items dedicated to ecological and environmental issues. Green agenda represents a promising research field, as the analysis of the environmental rhetoric can shed light on socio-cultural specifics and political ambitions of a country. News items play a significant role in promoting ideas and opinions, so they can be an effective instrument of building public opinion towards ecological and environmental issues, and thus are in the focus of our analysis. The analysis of the stance is conducted with the usage of the Attitude sub-system of Martin and White’s (2005) Appraisal framework.
The research demonstrated little difference in the way stance is implemented in the texts. Both in American and Russian news the author focuses on his emotions relating to the topic discussed rather than on the nature of the latter. Findings demonstrated presence of subjective and evaluative elements that are not typical for news, meanwhile Russian news clusters are characterized by much stronger presence of these elements.
It was revealed that the author prefers indirect means of transmitting the stance, which has been proved by former studies, and they demonstrate no correlation between the topic of a piece of news and the type of appraisal item. The abovementioned results constitute ground for further research in the field, namely whether the findings can be linked to features of sociocultural contexts.
