RATIONAL AND IRRATIONAL PRINCIPLES IN CONCEPTUALIZING THE PHENOMENA OF REALITY

Abstract:  It is considered that a human being interacts with the real world as a cognitive environment. This interaction is influenced by the following factors: human subjectivity, limited individual knowledge, forming of collective knowledge, complex interaction of components of collective knowledge in cognitive environment. Taking into account cognitive methodology and historical perspective we raise the question of the role of rational and irrational principles in conceptualization and linguistic representation of the real world phenomena. We consider myth and narration as complex forms of multicomponent conceptualization of knowledge. They make it possible to combine concepts and do compact transmission of information in cognitive environment. Narration is based on rational principle, myth – on the irrational one. Analysis of modern myths shows that human consciousness is developing, but a complete substitution of some mental structures for others is impossible. In narration causal relationships dominate, in myth - the image and juxtaposition, specific for archaic thinking. Perception of space and time developed later than static perception, so myth and narration are related as static and dynamic, pre-logical and logical. The study of myth and narration in cognitive aspect can clarify the role of rational and irrational in the process of conceptualization and representation of knowledge and cognitive environment.
